Ka-kaw

Liu, his breath ragged and face flushed with excitement, burst into the Arcane Smithy. His eyes were wide, his voice a frayed whisper, “The prisoners... they’ve woken up.” Matt, perched on a stool, almost fell over in surprise. Barry, his hands steady as ever while working on a magical contraption, paused in his meticulous crafting. Jay looked up from his pile of scrolls, ink-stained fingers freezing in their note-taking. Four pairs of eyes locked onto Liu, each face reflecting a different shade of anticipation. A palpable tension filled the room, a silent acknowledgment that their journey was about to take a new, unexpected turn. Turning his attention towards Biscuit, Matt’s eyes softened, a stark contrast to the hard determination in his gaze moments before. “Biscuit,” he began, his voice steady, although the room was still palpable with the shock of Liu’s news. “We’ll talk about the raft later.” His words hung in the air, a promise of discussions to come. The mood in the room shifted as everyone’s focus returned to the immediate issue at hand - the awakened prisoners.

Bemusement crossed Matt’s face, his brow furrowing. “Prisoners?” he echoed, confusion lacing his voice. “I wasn’t aware we had any.” His gaze swiveled to Barry, a silent question in his eyes. Barry, shoving aside the magical relic, rose from his bench, dusting off his hands. His eyes met Matt’s, a serious look on his face. “During the fight, I captured a few of them,” he explained, his voice firm but quiet. He paused. “I used my Dao and blocked some of their teleportation spells.”

Matt’s face contorted, his eyes blazing with anger. “Why didn’t you stop them teleporting Taylor instead of some randoms?!” he demanded, his voice hitting the walls of the room like a hammer blow. Barry, taken aback, blinked at him before his features fell into a resigned expression.

“I was fumbling in the dark, Matt,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper, yet clear and certain. “Teleportation spells are tricky, and in the heat of the fight, it was chaos. I only did what I could.” His gaze was steady, unflinching under Matt’s scrutiny, as he held the other man’s gaze. There was no defensiveness, only the quiet acceptance of a soldier who had made a split-second decision under fire.

Matt ran a hand through his hair, the tension in the room manifesting in his clenched jaw and the intensity in his eyes. Turning to face the others, he let out a deep, measured breath, attempting to calm his racing thoughts. “Show me,” he said, his voice barely more than a whisper, but carrying with it an undeniable command. As he spoke, the room fell into silence, all eyes on Barry as they waited for his response.

Barry nodded, picking up a small, unassuming key from a workbench. He gestured for everyone to follow him and led the way towards the cellar. The heavy door creaked open to reveal a dimly lit room where two figures huddled in a corner. As the group advanced, the figures came into the light.
